From: City of Philadelphia - Office of the Managing Director
The Office of Behavioral Health and Mental Retardation Services

Dear Ms King:

On behalf of the Office of Behavioral Health and Mental Retardation Services of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, we extend our sincere appreciation to you for your recent work with one of our displaced consumers.

It was brought to my attention that you went above and beyond the call of duty in your efforts to serve a Philadelphia resident who traveled to Detroit in Jan 2004.  This gentleman was without resources, needed mental health intervention and transportation back to Philadelphia.  As I understood it, you contacted the outpatient directer at Northwestern Human Services of Philadelphia, one of our community Behavioral Health System clinics, to solicit their assistance.  They in turn contacted this Office and througha  joint effort, the consumer was returned to Philadelphia for needed mental health services.

Often, what is communicated are the deficits that exist in our system.  This is why it was imperative that we recognize you for your efforts.  The Behavioral Health and Mental Retardation Services of Philadelphia salutes you and appreicates your efforts.  It is encouraging to know that the watchful eye of the mental health service provider doesn't end at the County borderline.

In parting, we wish you continued success servicing your Detroit community.

Sincerely,
Michael J Covone - Deputy Commissioner

Hey Betz,
I enjoyed your class.  Your vivid explanations made the material easy to absorb.  You are probably one of the warmest, best intentioned persons I have ever met.  I hope your strong desire to help never fades.  Few have intentions as strong as yours, with the means and ability to to put them in effect to the fullest.  You rock dude!

"When I started visiting Betz, I was confident that I was intelligent, kind, gifted, and destined to be unhappy and a disappointment to myself and others. Together, Betz and I have discovered many of the obstacles I was tripping on while searching for the path to Happiness. Now that I see the mess on the floor, I can choose whether to slip on a marble or to walk safely to the other side. Through recommended reading and an environment of trust and Psychological Self Love, I now have hope and direction in each day."

With great appreaciation for my freedom,
Fishing Line Man

Betz,

I wanted to thank you for everything you have taught me.  You are truly a wonderful teacher.  You used many creative techniques to teach the class [and] tried to accomodate the meeds of everyone.  I wish every teacher taught like you. Good luck with your PhD program!

"Ms. King brings a wealth of knowledge regarding addiction and mental illness. She sees the potential in each and every client she works with, and treats this often-discarded population with respect and dignity. To this day her clients speak respectfully and fondly of her. She is a natural teacher and able to meet clients where they are at using their language and symbol systemes to promote insight and self awareness."

Rick Mac Farlane, Clinical Director, Insight Recover Center

Hi Betz,

...I used to be "afraid" of abnormal psychology and now I have a new understanding of the people who face these problems.  The most important concept I'm leaving your class with is an appreciation for these people.  I hope to always view my clients (and people in general) as creative, imaginative, fun and talented.  And I hope to help them by always looking at the positive side of the medical model.  Thank you.  I wish you could teach all my classes.

"When I first met Betz, I had seen various therapists over a ten year period. In all of that time, I never broke through the wall of true understanding. Betz provided the tools I needed to change my life. I've often said she saved my life. It sounds dramatic but it's true--she is brilliant."

"When I first met Betz, I was a stressed out person who had lost himself in the world. I was trying to control myself and everything else, hoping that it would all get better. That wasn’t working; instead the world was controlling me. Betz helped me see that it was the attempt to control which wasn’t working. She introduced me to this great little kid inside of myself. Betz helped me reconnect with that little kid, and that taught me how to ask for what I want. Since working with Betz I have gotten back to being me. I have let go of the stress, and I have started to express the true me. What joy that has created, and what luck I had in meeting her."

Dear Betz,
I love this class and the concept of psychology!  In fact, I am seriously considering switching my major.  I can also see, well I think, that you are great at what you do and I want to congratulate you on all your accomplishments and encourage you to continue being as great as you are.  Thanks for everything!

Subject: Thanks for sending my wife home happy, relaxed, and inspired.

Betz,

I just wanted to thank you for sending my wife home happy, relaxed, and inspired. We listened to Closer to Fine when she got home.

We both think there is something magical about you. We both feel so much better after meeting with you, and you are the first person to get our child to feel comfortable around dogs.

Anyway, we are sending you lots and lots of smiles

See you Wednesday,

Fishing Line Man

Dear Betz,
...You were a great find for me.  Your approach and skills are extraordinary!  I can't say enough about how much you helped me with emotional awareness and great tools to improve myself.  I come away from our sessions with the ability to be a much stronger and healthier person.  For that, I am forever grateful!

Sincerely,
Million Dollar Baby
